ABSTRACT
According to Lazarus and Folkman (1984) family is a system able to adapt to the socio-cultural
environment. The process of adaptability, in its classical approach, means learning and
internalization. Also said, family develops coping mechanisms, an ensemble of skills which are
interposed by an individual between him/her and the traumatic event in order to deal with minor to
major stress. This paper tries to analyze, working with theoretic and empiric arguments, the way in
which the Romanian society has been „modernized” and „post-modernized”. The paper argues the
idea that Romanian society balances between the traditional family pattern and the modern pattern
based on imitating other European societies.
Key words: family, adaptability, morality, postmodernity, Romanian society.
