ABSTRACT
Security has been and will be a central concept in Security Studies, Social Studies and International
Relations, a concept which, in spite of its widespread use, does not benefit from a definition which
is largely accepted among the practicians as well as theoreticians. The concept of security has
become even more relevant since the 1990s when essential changes could be noticed in the
International Relations and in the security environment, as a consequence of the dissolution of the
bipolarity at the international level and due to globalization. In the last decades the debates
regarding the definition of security have intesified, while it is largely accepted that security means
today something else than before the end of the Cold War.
Key words: security, Cold War, globalization, theory of international relations.
